Jardin Zoologico de Buenos Aires

Today we went to the Buenos Aires Zoo.  We had been waiting to get our Argentine ID because it was supposed to be cheaper.  Turned out it didn't matter.  It was a perfect day in the low 20's (70+ degrees) with a bit of a breeze.

Aguara Guazu is either a huge fox or a foxy dog.  They had just brought out his food hidden in this ball to make him work to get it.  Problem with these animals is they have a strong musk smell.  You can translate that as skunk...don't be downwind!
Elefante Africano was kind enough to come close enough to photograph.
and eventually...
He even stepped up for us!
The Guacamayos were just one (in many colors) of many kinds of parrots.
They also come in Blue and Yellow or Green

The Condor wasn't in his condo...but we did see his nests way up in the top

We found him later getting ready for a "Charla" or talk about Raptor Birds, along with an Eagle.

There is a Project to Save the Birds of Prey, "Los Aves Rapaces"

The owls were shy and difficult to film through the wires, plus they kept turning their heads away

but then we found a bunch of birds of prey that were very accommodating.

This eagle was so beautiful, but also camera shy.

This says that these are white lions, not albinos

The lionesses were in one compound together

These two were pacing back and forth
Meanwhile the king was lounging around, totally relaxed!

These guys are called Maya Patagonia
They look a bit like Wallabees, but they don't jump or even hop
They, along with the ducks and peacocks just kind of have run of the zoo.
Very friendly and looking for a hand-out.
Trying to get a picture of the Meerkats was a job.
They were very busy and didn't have time for pictures.

Lots and lots of Monkeys (Monos)

The Orangutan was not very sociable until we came back and my camera charge was gone. Then he was hanging from the jungle gym!

The Brown Bear and then the Polar bear just wanted to go inside, but their caves were closed to keep them out for the public.  At least the Polar bear had a pool.
He was just getting out of the pool when I discovered that if I held down the button I could take a series of shots and get some really good ones.  Unfortunately it also depleted the charge on my camera.
Or maybe it was taking the 300+ pictures.

OMG I turning into Meagan! I take hundreds of photos.

Another parrot.  this one is in a hole.
This is the peacock that greeted us as we entered and left.

Now HE would pose!

Here's his lady friend, the peahen.

And a redbilled duck that was also willing to pose for me.

The Rhea not only posed...
But did a whole dance...
just for us!

There was an ocelot...
There was a cheetah
but the star of the show was ...
The White Bengal Tiger

Who gave up his nap so we could get some nice shots...

Actually I took about 20 , but these were the best.
and a close-up thanks to the zoom lens.

The Baboon gave us a wave...

And one of the zoo staff let me snap her pic..

Welcome to the farm had a lot of recognizable animals
donkey or burro
goat or cabra
And a rooster

We wouldn't be in South America without seeing
The llamas.  These troughs allow the kids to put food at the top and it slides down to the animals without anyone getting their fingers nibbled or bitten.  Great idea.

This one is kind of a pushme pullyou (Dr. Doolittle animal)

The vacuna is a smaller version.  This one teething on a cable

And the alpaca is the hairier version.

and more parrots

A butterfly....just for Lisa

There were 2 two storied carousels that worked!
This is sort of the local large rodent

I think this is a Chinese Pheasant
Does Santa know his reindeer are summering in Buenos Aires?
The Coipo is like a cross between a beaver and a rat
Really good swimmer with a skinny tail.

Coatlmundi

yep, more monkeys

This is a wild cat the size of a housecat.

Sea lions are called lobos marinos, or sea wolves in Spanish

and more monkeys

and more monkeys

Perfect wall painting for this place.

the last photo I got turned out pretty well.  It's a lion fish, here it is called a scorpion fish.

We saw most everything.  I took pictures of most everything and then had to do some severe editing to get it down to what is here.  A fun day!  And now my feet hurt, so I'm going to bed!
