Our excursion to La Plata

For the last two Saturdays we have gone to La Plata, a suburb to the southeast of Buenos Aires, to teach a Career Workshop.  The first time I just forgot to take pictures.  This time I did much better.
Sometimes it's just fun to take shots of the countryside .
Of Course trying to take pictures in a car going 130 kmh (about 80mph) isn't easy.  I finally got smart and switched to sports mode on the camera. We were riding in what they call a remis.  It's a limo service, but depending on how many people you are transporting it could be a car (we were in a Citroen) or a minbus, or a stretch van.  Trust me, it's much better than driving on your own in Buenos Aires.  We could possibly get a car from the Area Office motor pool.  But this way if there is a problem it is an Argentine person who is taking care of it, doing the talking etc.
We saw lots of livestock, cows, sheep and horses.  Part of the trip was a nature preserve.  The land around here is very flat as it is part of the La Plata River Delta area.  From my office window it looks like you are looking at the ocean, but it's the river.  Across from us is actually Uruguay, but it is too far away to see.

Here's the Welcome to the City of La Plata Sign.

This place caught my eye.  Looks like a business on the bottom and a nice apartment on the top.
Still trying to figure these black containers on top of the houses out.  My first thought was that they might be an ecological way to heat water by solar power.  My husband, Hays said theypainted the water towers in the army camps in Vietnam black to heat the water for showers.

We had such a great time teaching the Career Workshop in La Platta.  The participants were wonderful.  One of them, the young lady on the far right of this picture is blind.  Big thanks to my former student and now translation colleague, Jose Lopez.  He is also blind and he trained me how to work with a blind student who has computer skills.

I learned to put all class materials into electronic form.  The outline of the PowerPoint, the handouts were sent to her computer and I included the online version of the training workbook.  The entire class was able to read (or have the computer read to her) the materials necessary and everyone was a full participant.

Can't wait to teach my next class....
